In 2017 I started creating new orchid hybrids. First within a genus, which is the easiest. Later within a subtribe and now within a tribe.
The rate of failure, usually already during pollination, naturally increases the further the parents are genetically apart. But there are always exceptions or lucky hits that you have to find. Despite this, less than 1% of the pollinated parent combinations produce capsules, many of which are empty or not viable. Even if some or many seedlings make it back from the lab to the garden, they may prove to be non-viable sooner or later. Every success is something special, no matter how good or bad the result is.
