Oncidium Twinkle x Macradenia multiflora
Trying to cross Oncidium with Macradenia may seem daring, but both genera are
in the same subtribe, so there is a chance. Everything went faster than expected.
Pollinated in January 2022 and the capsule sent to the lab for green sowing four
months later, I only received one bottle with 40 seedlings back in June 2023.
Better than nothing.
In April 2024, after only 10 months, I discovered a flower shoot on one of the still
small young plants. The plant had clearly overdone itself, the first two mature buds
fell off, the few that opened only partially and I had to help it along a bit manually.
The lip looks very chaotic, even if only partially open. It will be interesting to get a
fully opened flower.
A second Oncidenia with a different Oncidium parent also only produced one bottle
despite the large capsule, but with only 6 seedlings; these seem to have opted for
growth rather than rapid flowering.
